Title: crash for no reason
Post by Jennifer Knies on Mar 18th, 2005 at 1:55pm
HYPHY crashes repeatedly for me- I reinstalled it- have tried working with all the different version- I am using Windows XP and the XP version crashed as soon as I opened it!  The other versions crash at random times- I get an error message such as " HYPHY has encountered an error and needs to close now"
Very frustrating! Please help!

Dear Jennifer,

Did any HyPhy windows open at all or is there just the error message? Could you also paste the details on the Windows XP crash (you can see them by clicking on the relevant button is the error dialog, I believe), so that I can see where the code crashes? Try the -P3 executable since it should be most compatible - what kind of processor does your computer have?

Cheers,
Sergei

P.S. I just tested the most recent build on a Windows machine and it seems to run fine for me. My guess is that you may be (i) using a really old machine (Pentium II or earlier), (ii) trying to run the executable optimized for Athlon XP processor on a Pentium IV (or vice versa).
If all FOUR executables crash on launch, let me know.

My computer is not old; it is new; so I don't think that is the problem.  I tried working with -P3 - without much success.  I had input several partitions from a single dataset and built a likelihood for each partition to estimate Ti/Tv.  The first time it worked fine; the second time after I hit build - then optimize- then view parameters- the parameters all popped up.  The Ti/Tv for each partition was 1- which I don't believe- and then an error window popped up saying that HYPHY had encountered an error and needed to close.  I can't find the text error file which was supposedly saved to my computer.

Dear Jennifer,

It sound like you found a bug in the program. I'll be happy to fix it, but in order to do this I need:

1). The data file you have used
2). The sequence of steps (menu options/etc) - as detailed as possible - which lead to the crash.

You can just e-mail me the info; I need it to be able to recreate the crash on my machine so I can debug. Bug reports from users like this are extermely useful for making the program better.

Thanks,
Sergei
