Mac Pro 12-core crashing on HyPhy
Jun 7th, 2011 at 1:05pm

My brand new Mac Pro 12-core (2.66Ghz, 6GB RAM) crashes while I am running a dN analysis. Positive Selection>SubtreeSelectionComparison. This is to test whether the two subtrees on either side of a node have different dN's. It might be the data, since it doesn't crash on ALL codon alignments I am running (I input precomputed ML trees for the topology), but -still- this is the first time this computer crashes (and it's a tough one) and -moreover- 10 times in one day.

It might be an OSX vulnerability triggered by HyPhy.

I tried the precompiled v2.0 binary, I compiled it myself in Xcode, and used the precompiled v1.0 binary. v1.0 appears to be slightly more stable, as it hasn't crashed with all alignments.

Since many datasets take >30min to run (estimates are on a per-codon basis), it is kind of hard to compare statistically the 3 executables, but I just wanted to see whether anyone else had HyPhy-associated Mac Pro multi-core crashes.

Thanks,
sergios

Hi Sergios,

This is not good. Can you send me a file and enough information to try to recreate the crash?
